A summary from Mennonite Church Canada’s Climate Change Working Group was included in every attendee’s packet at the denomination’s annual assembly at Saskatoon, July 6 to 10, 2016. This research initiative was in response to a recommendation received from delegates at Assembly 2014, that MC Canada consider divestment from the fossil fuel industry.

The working group recommended that MC Canada “adopt a strong deliberate investment approach for future investments” rather than divestment from the small amount of funds currently invested in fossil fuels. “We concluded that it is far more important for future MC-CAN investments to go forward in positive directions than to deploy a negative screen for past investments on one component of the changing climate,” the summary stated. Randolph Haluza-DeLay, PhD, and Joanne Moyer, PhD served on the Climate Change Working Group and drafted the 20-page recommendation.
