An advocate for Lake Kivu and the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo reports that his government intends to mine for oil in this region. This is a threat to both Lake Kivu and the park, which is home to one of the few remaining populations of gorillas. It would also contribute to climate change.

An alternate approach would be to harvest naturally occurring methane from the lake. This would not only protect the park and the lake; it would also provide needed fuel for the people of the Congo.

Please pray for this concern. If you feel a calling to work at it in other ways, contact mccn@goshen.edu and we can put you in touch.
