Raising Dam a Threat to Native American Sacred Lands

MCCN member Ronald Wyse of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, invites us to respond to this request from Caleen Sisk, Chief of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe in the Shasta Cascade region of California. The sacred lands of this Native American group are threatened by legislation in the U.S. Senate that aims to raise the height of the Shasta Dam. The dam project is under consideration due to the drought in this area, and provides one illustration of the fact that Indigenous peoples often bear the brunt of environmental harms. Sisk says raising the dam would flood sacred ceremonial places, endanger Chinook salmon and cause other ecological harm.
